Who We Are: Not a Club, by Design
Sovereign was built around a complaint that shows up constantly in boat club reviews nationally: people pay to join, then can’t get a Saturday reservation once everyone else who joined wants the same Saturday. That’s why some of the big clubs restrict their members to only 4 hours on Saturdays and Sundays – so they can satisfy at least 4 of the 13 members that they often have allocated per boat.
Because of slow going in no-wake zones going to and from their destinations, these members have only a short time at their objective.
Sovereign’s fix is to not be a club at all. There are no membership initiation fees, no annual dues, no monthly payments, and no 12-month contracts. You buy a rental package sized in days to your planned usage of the boat — one day, five days, twelve or twenty-five. If you think you will need more days, you can buy an unlimited package.

Our Fleet: Four Boats, Chosen on Purpose
Another difference between Sovereign and many clubs is the quality, size and amenities on their boats. Typically, once outfitted Sovereign boats cost $275,000 or more, compared to $30,000 to $70,000, for the plain-vanilla pontoon and bay boats that are not designed to go offshore, which the mass-market clubs offer.
Sovereign runs a hand-picked fleet of four premium boats in the 27’–to 31’ range — not a volume fleet composed of 18’ to 24’ boats. Every boat (except one) is powered by twin outboard engines, a joystick or bow thruster, electric heads, electric anchor windlasses, fiberglass hardtops, full electronics with chartplotter, and VHF radio.

Just button her up for a passing summer shower or a chilly morning outing. that can open up: she’s nimble, fast, and purpose-built for Florida coastal and offshore waters.
Robalo R317 (Bradenton/Cortez) — a 31’ dual-console with offshore capability and a cockpit sized for family outings, including fishing, and she has a popular side door.
Pursuit DC266 (Tampa/St. Petersburg) — a 26’ twin-outboard dual-console, ideal for Tampa Bay and Gulf cruising or fishing and island-hopping. She has a full set of cruising canvas for 3-season boating.
Axopar 29 Sun Top (Palm Beach) — She has a large U-shaped seating arrangement around a large table behind the helm that seats six and is ideal for lunch and cocktails. Forward cabin for a mid-day nap.
A small fleet is a feature, not a limitation. Four boats can be maintained to a standard no volume fleet matches, and low renter-to-boat ratios are only possible when capacity is genuinely capped.

Who We Serve
Sovereign renters run the gamut from professional families in their 40s with school-age children, to empty-nester couples whose children and grandchildren love to go boating with grandad and grandma. There are also some successful young men in their 30s, who want to get their sea legs and take advantage of Sovereign’s professional instruction program, then enough sea time to feel comfortable owning their own vessel.
More typically, however, Sovereign renters have owned boats before and love being on the water, but have no illusions about the high cost of their romance with the sea.
Annual Operating Expenses Have Skyrocketed
Slips in South Florida are now in short supply, and three large conglomerates have been buying up the good ones, and jacking up slip prices to unheard of levels. Slips cost from $18k to $22k for a 27’ to 30’ boat. Dry stack can cost $12k a year or more.
Back-to-back hurricane seasons have driven Florida boat insurance to the highest in the nation. Trades people are now scarce, and finding competent electricians and engine mechanics means that virtually any project is a $2k bill, and the 100-hour service on twin outboards runs easily over $3k. A washdown and cleaning crew costs $175 for an hour or two, and full detailing is a $600 bill. All told, it cost $30-$35k per year just to keep Sovereign’s boat operating.
Self-Drive by Default, Captain When You Want One
Every Sovereign boat is self-drive by default. In the charter trade, it’s called “bare boat” – bare of captain. If you’d rather have a licensed captain aboard, one can be supplied on request as a paid add-on. Captain training is also available as a paid add-on — six hours over two days — for renters who want to build docking and boat-handling confidence on the exact boats they’ll be running.
How The Sovereign Program Works
- Choose a package sized to your realistic 12-month usage — or in the case of Snowbirds, to their 4 to 6 month usage: one day, five days, twelve or twenty-five.
- Reserve your dates by phone or online through the reservation calendar up to 12 months in advance. This is great for Snowbirds as they can lock in days in December and January, in July and August, and not have to worry about availability. Low renter-to-boat ratios mean boats are available most days.
- Arrive on your time schedule because the boat will be waiting all day for you.
- Return it on your schedule and clean it, or ask Sovereign to do it.

Is Sovereign a boat club, time-share or a membership program?
No. Sovereign Boat Fleet is a self-drive boat rental service with day-based packages. There are no membership fees, no annual dues, and no initiation fees — you pay only for the days you use.
How is that different from a boat club?
A club charges to join and then charges monthly whether you use the boat or not, while selling as many memberships as possible against a shared fleet. Sovereign sells days. The only recurring cost is the boating you actually do, and capacity is kept low relative to the fleet so availability holds.
Do I need boating experience to rent?
Prior boat ownership isn’t required. However, boat-handling proficiency is. That’s why Sovereign makes available USCG-licensed captains and certified boat safety instructors to train new renters who need it, or former boaters who are rusty and need to brush up.
Do the boats come with a captain?
Boats are intended for renter-operators and are self-drive by default. If a captain is desired, one can be supplied by Sovereign on request as a paid add-on.
What if the boat isn’t available on my date?
When renters buy a package they can reserve any four days wanted on a 12-month calendar. Boats can be reserved far in advance for special days such as anniversaries, graduations, Father’s Day, and birthdays. Once one day is used, renters can automatically reserve another day, so long as days are remaining in their package.
